Dan Karpuc: Houston Astros (-175)
The Phillies are a really fun team and will have America rooting for them against the Astros, but Houston is the better team and has quietly been among the best teams in the majors all year. The Astros haven’t lost a single game in the postseason and have everything a World Series club needs: starting pitching, relief pitching, right-handed hitting, left-handed hitting, power, cohesion, an experienced manager and an experienced roster. Mattress Mack will win $75 million dollars if Houston wins it all and, as much fun as it is to root against him, it’s very difficult for me to not put my money behind the superior team.

I’m sticking with my original pick for the Astros to win the World Series, especially after they absolutely destroyed the Yankees in the ALCS. They swept New York with no mercy in that series and will now take on the Phillies for all the marbles. The Phillies are a good team and they have some sparks of excitement in Kyle Schwarber, Rhys Hoskins and Bryce Harper, but the Astros are the better team and they’re looking for a World Series win after losing to Atlanta last season, and I think they get it this time.

As much as I'd like to pick the Phillies here and root for the underdog story, they just don't have the arms to hang with Houston in a seven-game series. BetQL backs me (and the rest of our writers above) up on that, projecting the Astros with a 62.7% chance to win the World Series (most likely in six games). Another way to look at it is that the best price you can get on the Phillies to win as of Monday morning was +160, giving them an implied probability of 38.5% to win; our model gives them a 37.3% chance, meaning there's just not enough value there to back to (clear) underdog.
If you do want to squeeze more value out of the Astros winning, look at them winning in six games, which is +400 at BetMGM and the most likely outcome with a 20.6% chance, according to our model. I also like Alex Bregman to win World Series MVP at +1200 at FanDuel. He's had a strong postseason so far (.333/.375/.600, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and always seems to come to the plate with guys on base.
